Broncos Start Strong Before Falling 3-1 at UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. –  The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead Saturday on the road at No. 24 UC San Diego but the host Tritons took the next three games to capture a 3-1 win over the Broncos.

On offense, junior Jessica Doerner led CPP in kills for the fifth-straight match with a 14-kill performane Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Jones contributed seven blocks for the Broncos as that total marks her highest since Sept. 14.

The loss is the third consecutive for the Broncos, who will return to action Thursday with a 5 p.m. home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.

CPP held a slight edge over UCSD for most of the first game Saturday and the visitors held a 22-19 margin late. After a pair of attack errors on the Tritons, Taylr Kreutziger and Nicoletta Stork combined on a block to secure the 25-19 win for the Broncos.

UCSD stole the momentum away in the second game by staking an 11-3 lead early with a run featuring nine-straight serves from Brittany Lombardi. A kill by Diana Lake stopped the stretch of Triton points finally but CPP couldn't overcome that early run and ended up falling in the second frame, 25-15.

The two teams played closer through the early part of the third game as the Broncos rallied from an 11-9 deficit to tie it up at 11-11. That two-point swing featured a Doerner kill off a Katie Colin assist and then a combined block from Stork and Jones. UCSD showed a balanced attack late though and came away with the 25-19 result.

In the fourth and final game Saturday, the Tritons got a bit more separation early and used that margin to cruise to a 25-19 victory in that frame. In the end, UCSD outhit the Broncos .248 to .168. Three Tritons recorded double-digit kill totals, led by Sophie Rowe's 18.

Aside from Doerner, CPP's other stars Saturday on offense included Taylr Kreutziger with nine kills and just four attack errors while Alexa Hasen hit .625 with five kills. Stork collected 29 assists and Kelly Bonja added a team-high 18 digs.
