POMONA, Calif. – With record performances from
Jessica Doerner and
Kelly Bonja, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 home win Thursday over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Doerner lifted the Broncos' offense, tallying 22 kills to go along with just three attack errors. The kill total and attack percentage of .422 represent career bests for the junior from Redondo Beach.
Meanwhile, Bonja did her part in slowing down the Otters' attack Thursday. The senior libero from San Dimas racked up 27 digs, the highest three-game total she's reached as a Bronco.
Bonja is now 35 digs away from moving into sole possession of second place in the CPP record books for digs. She has collected 1,227 digs in her prolific career, trailing just Nikki Egilske (1,261) and Kiting Kolar (1,517).
Doerner and Bonja got plenty of support from the rest of the team, including a 29-assist outing from senior setter
Jamie Kidd and a five-block effort by senior middle blocker
Taylr Kreutziger.
CPP got off to strong starts in each of the sets Thursday, including a 5-0 run to start the first frame as freshman
Zoe Herrera served the Broncos through that stretch. The first three points of the match featured kills from Doerner.
Monterey Bay chipped away at the lead and managed to get a game point at 24-23. CPP showed its resiliency, securing a 29-27 win there with the final two kills coming from Kreutziger and
Diana Lake.
Bonja and
Erin Noriega served the Broncos out to an 8-1 lead in the second game, with that strong start featuring stellar offensive play by Lake and
Alexa Hasen. This time CPP kept its distance and a combined block by Kreutziger and
Christen Williams wrapped up the 25-18 victory.
Mirroring the first game, Herrera served the Broncos to a 5-0 edge in the third and final frame. Doerner continued to roll on offense and Lake added support in the kill category as well, collecting 10 of her own.
CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State East Bay.
