POMONA, Calif. – A back-and-forth match Saturday between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay moved to the fifth set with the result up for grabs.
The Broncos denied the Pioneers' attempt at a comeback win as the hosts delivered key blocks down the stretch to take the 3-2 victory after a 15-13 finish in the fifth. CPP now takes a two-match winning streak into a Wednesday home contest against Humboldt State.
Freshman
Alexa Hasen led the blocking effort Saturday, collecting two blocks in the final frame and seven overall on the night. As a team, CPP totaled 24 block assists with
Taylr Kreutziger adding five of her own.
With the score deadlocked at 11-11 in the fifth, the Broncos finished strong for the 15-13 result. In that stretch, junior
Jessica Doerner tallied two kills before
Lauren Jones provided the kill on the clinching point.
Doerner led the team in kills Saturday with 19 as the Redondo Beach native is averaging 17.75 per match over the last four contests.
The first game featured six occasions of a tie score as the early lead was fiercely contested. Although the Broncos were stymied at 24-23 with a CSUEB block, CPP rallied for two-straight points from Hasen kills to close out the 26-24 win. Service errors hurt the visitors throughout Saturday's match as East Bay totaled nine overall.
The Pioneers used an 8-0 serving run from Samantha Siebert to cruise to a 25-18 victory in the second game. The Broncos continued the seesaw trend in the third as
Diana Lake helped the hosts collect an easy 25-17 win in that portion of the match. Through the match, Lake totaled 15 kills to join Doerner in double figures.
CPP fell flat offensively and defensively in the fourth game as the Pioneers rolled to 25-13 to force the fifth and final game. Everything clicked for the Broncos in the last frame. On defense, senior libero
Kelly Bonja continued to work tirelessly to hold down East Bay's offense. Bonja racked up 29 digs Saturday and is now just six away from moving into sole possesion of second place in the Broncos' record books.
In terms of setting in the fifth,
Nicoletta Stork contributed five assists early while
Katie Colin recorded the final two assists on the deciding kills by Doerner and Jones.
Jamie Kidd finished with a team-high 22 assists Saturday and Colin contributed 17.
Zoe Herrera and
Erin Noriega lended plenty of help defensively, registering dig totals of 15 and 11 respectively.
