LOS ANGELES – An impressive comeback attempt from the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fell just short Saturday in a tough 3-2 loss at Cal State L.A.
After falling down two sets to none, the Broncos rallied to win the next two frames.
In a back-and-forth fifth and final set, the two teams entered 10 different occasions of the score being tied.
After a
Jessica Doerner kill tied the game at 14-14, a Golden Eagles' attack error gave CPP match point at 15-14. Cal State L.A. rattled off three-straight points though to close out the 17-15 result and wrap up the 3-2 victory.
The Broncos fall to 13-14 overall and 9-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-13 overall and 12-8 in league play.
Broncos' senior libero
Kelly Bonja recorded 33 digs to raise her season total to 503. That mark breaks the program's single-season record for digs, previously set in 2008 when Rafaela Rosa collected 477.
Despite falling into the 2-0 deficit, CPP started gaining momentum late in the third game. With
Diana Lake,
Taylr Kreutziger and Doerner leading the offense in that stretch, the Broncos finished with a 6-1 run to take the game by a 25-16 result. Through the evening, Doerner totaled 20 kills while Lake and Kreutziger added 16 and 11 respectively.
Freshman
Alexa Hasen came through in the clutch in the fourth game, recording key kills late in the frame that helped CPP even the match at two sets apiece.
Although Saturday's heartbreaking result in the fifth game ended with a 3-2 loss for the Broncos, several performances still stand out for the CPP squad.
Jamie Kidd collected 45 assists with a stellar night at the setting position.
The Broncos will return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. home match against San Francisco State.
