Broncos Fall in Five to San Francisco State Thursday

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team saw two of its impressive streaks end Thursday in a 3-2 loss to San Francisco State. The result stopped the Broncos' three-match winning streak at Kellogg Gym and it also put an end to the team's five-match winning streak against the Gators.

The visiting SF State squad entered the week at the No. 7 spot in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings and tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. CPP, 13-15 overall this season, ended up splitting the 2012 season series with the Gators after sweeping the 2010 and 2011 sets.

With the score tied at 8-8 in the first game Thursday, Lauren Jones and Taylr Kreutziger combined for a key block off a Jaclyn Clark attack to push the Broncos ahead 9-8. CPP continued to build its momentum as Jamie Kidd and Alexa Hasen recorded block assists just before Jones fired in a service ace to force the Gators to call a timeout at 14-11.

CPP continued to excel on the blocks as another one from Kidd and Hasen capped off a 6-0 run for the hosts to push their lead to 18-12. Yet another block gave the Broncos their first set point at 24-18 but six unanswered points by SFSU tied the score at 24-24. The two teams traded a pair of points before Diana Lake contributed a kill and Jessica Doerner delivered with a solo block to clinch the 27-25 result for CPP.

The Broncos started strong in the second set as well. Lake knocked in two-straight services to pull CPP ahead 7-3 and force an early SFSU timeout. The host's edge widened to as large as seven with a Jones kill off a Katie Colin assist and the Broncos kept their lead above three the rest of the set.

In the third game, CPP jumped out to a 6-1 lead with a pair of early kills by Jones. The Gators continued to fight and managed to tie the score at 11-11 after a Kelly Ostello kill. The teams entered three more occasions of tie scores before the Gators took a 21-20 lead off a Meagan Wright service ace. SFSU carried that momentum to the end of the set, which ended at 25-22 in favor of the visitors.

A Kelly Bonja service ace put CPP ahead 4-2 early in the fourth before the Gators rallied back to tie it at 4-4. The two teams traded points back and forth to 7-7, when SFSU then started a 3-0 run to force a Broncos' timeout. CPP stayed within striking distance but the Gators held on for the fourth-set 25-20 victory.

The Broncos fall into an early deficit in the fifth but battled back to tie the score at 5-5. SF State regained the momentum by taking three-straight points before the teams switched sides. The Gators closed out the match strong, going 5-1 down the stretch with that span featuring three kills by Ostello.

Leading the attack for CPP were Doerner and Lake, who collected kill totals of 15 and 13 respectively. Bonja totaled 28 digs while Kidd paced the team in assists with 27. Hasen came through with some big blocks and finished with block assists in total.

CPP will close out the 2012 season on Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against Sonoma State. A "Senior Night" pregame ceremony will be held to honor Bonja, Kidd, Kreutziger and Lake.
