Lake, Kreutziger Lift Broncos to 3-0 Sweep of Jacks

POMONA, Calif. –  With consistency on offense and terrific blocking up front, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team jumped out to an early lead Wednesday and cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Humboldt State.

The Broncos' offense centered around senior Diana Lake, who finished with 14 kills on the night and just two errors. Fellow fourth-year Taylr Kreutziger provided efficiency on the attack as well, collecting eight kills to go along with a hitting percentage of .571.

With the result, CPP improves its winning streak to three matches and rises back to .500 in conference play at 9-9. In terms of winning percentage, the seventh-place Broncos are just .029 out of fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation (CCAA).

Another CPP senior had a historical night defensively, as libero Kelly Bonja moved into second place all-time in the Broncos' record books for digs. Bonja has collected 1,267 through her career and only trails Kiting Kolar's 1,517 on that leaderboard.

The Broncos jumped out an 8-2 lead in the first game with Bonja ending that run with seven-straight serves. The spurt also featured a pair of block assists from freshman Alexa Hasen, who collected five of the team's 14 block assists on the night. Although HSU pulled to within five points late in the frame, Kreutziger closed the game with a kill off a Katie Colin assist.

The two teams encountered a 14-14 tie in the second game but the Broncos pulled away late. Bonja put together six-consecutive serves in that run to combine with kills from Lake and Jessica Doerner. CPP wrapped up the 25-20 result with a Doerner kill to finish it off.

The Jacks continued to hang tough in the third game and the visitors managed to take a 14-11 edge through the middle portion of the frame. The Broncos stormed back though with Colin serving while freshmen Christen Williams and Brianna Thierjung contributed kills in that stretch. With the score at 24-22 for a CPP match point, Thierjung and Hasen combined on a block to wrap up the sweep.

The Broncos will now shift their attention to a pair of road matches this weekend. CPP will first challenge Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.
