CHICO, Calif. - Trailing 7-0 in the late innings Sunday at 15th-ranked Chico State, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team put together an offensive rally that cut the Wildcats' lead to just two runs.
The CSUC attack countered right back though as the hosts ended up collecting 16 hits en route to the 11-5 win. Wildcats' junior right-hander reliever Mike Botelho extinguished any hopes of a Broncos' comeback as he held CPP to one run through the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save
The result allows CSUC to salvage a series split and drops the Broncos to marks of 13-6 overall and 6-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation (CCAA).
Leading the way once again for the CPP offense was junior
Donald Walter, who went 3-for-5 Sunday with a double and a homerun. Through the four-game series in Chico, Walter collected 11 hits in 18 at-bats for a .611 average.
Although Broncos' freshman starter
J.J. Franklin didn't allow an extra-base hit, the Wildcats collected seven singles against him and got to reliever
Shane Philipps as well to total seven runs through the first five innings.
Franklin lasted 3.1 innings while hitting three batters. Only three of the five scores on the first-year righthander ended up being earned because of a CPP error.
The Broncos made things interesting with five runs between the seventh and eighth innings to make it a 7-5 contest.
Charles Ball and
Brennen Salgado opened the seventh with back-to-back singles and later in the frame, Nicholas Cooksey and Walter drove in two runs apiece.
The eighth inning started in similar fashion as
Joseph Eusebio and Ball collected two-straight singles against Wildcats' reliever Nick Baker. This time though CPP could only get one run, which came off a
Chris Curtis RBI groundout.
After CSUC countered with four scores of its own in the bottom half of the eighth, Walter launched a solo shot in the ninth that brought the final tally to 11-6 in favor of the Wildcats.
The Broncos will return to action on Thursday with a 2 p.m. road contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills to begin a four-game home-and-home series. CPP will play a doubleheader with the Toros at Scolinos Field Saturday.
