CARSON, Calif. - Jenzen Torres delivered a three-run homer for the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team in the ninth inning Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, slashing the Broncos' four-run deficit to just one.
Despite getting the potential tying run on first with one out, CPP couldn't even the score and ended up falling 9-8 to the host Toros.
The result bumps the Broncos to 14-7 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while CSUDH snaps a five-game losing streak to stand at 5-13 overall and 3-11 through league action.
CPP staked a 4-0 lead with a potent offense in the early innings. Senior outfielder
Chris Curtis knocked his first career homerun as a Bronco in the second, giving CPP a 2-0 edge.
Torres opened the third inning with single and
Donald Walter followed with an RBI double.
Joseph Eusebio added a sacrifice fly to put the Broncos ahead 4-0.
Although CPP starting left-hander
Ryan Dunn worked through the first three innings without giving up a hit, defensive miscues by the Broncos allowed CSUDH to get on the scoreboard with two scores in the bottom of the fourth.
Aggressive baserunning from outfielder
Jordan Whitman helped CPP extend its lead to 5-2, as the junior stole third and scored on a throwing error from the Toros.
The CSUDH offense kept its momentum going in the fifth and the sixth though, forcing Dunn out of the contest and tagging reliever
J.J. Franklin for two earned runs in one inning of work. With those rallies and another score in the eighth, the Toros took a 9-5 advantage into the ninth.
Torres' three-run homer gave the visiting Broncos a glimmer of hope but with a runner on first and one out, CSUDH reliever Brian Oda induced a ground ball double play to close out the narrow 9-8 victory.
Torres and Walter led the visitors in hits with three apiece and out of the bullpen,
Shane Philipps and
Kyle McNutt held the Toros to zero earned runs through the final 2.1 innings.
CPP and CSUDH will conclude the series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
