ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – FAlthough the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team didn't get the result it wanted Sunday at Sonoma State, the Broncos played tough on the road against the league's best.
Sunday's match certainly was a physical one, as the 90 minutes of action featured 37 fouls and 11 yellow cards.
With the win, SSU stays undefeated in conference play at 4-0-0 while holding an overall mark of 5-1-0. The Broncos are now 2-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The two squads played even through the first 45 minutes Sunday before Taylor Varnadore struck for the game's lone score at the 46:53 mark. After passes from Nico Spann and Michel Arroyo, Varnadore fired a shot past CPP netminder
Kris Minton to break the scoreless tie.
The Seawolves outshot the Broncos, 15-7, while earning 12 corner kicks to the visitor's three.
Liam Hall registered a shot on goal for the Broncos while teammate
Brandon Cortez took two attempts at the frame.
CPP will play its conference home opener on Friday at Kellogg Field. It'll be "Pack the Stands" as with the Broncos hosting UC San Diego for a 4:30 p.m. match. The same two squads played last week, with the Tritons of UCSD securing a 1-0 victory in La Jolla.
