POMONA, Calif. –  The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team fell into a 4-0 deficit Friday but rallied to play even in the second half before dropping a 5-1 result to UC San Diego on "Pack the Stands Night" at Kellogg Field.

The Tritons, ranked ninth nationally at the Division II level, recorded three goals through the first 19 minutes of action and that lead proved to be too much to overcome for CPP.

The Broncos fall to 2-4-0 overall and 0-4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while UCSD stays undefeated at 6-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 through league action.

Cassie Callahan got the Tritons on the board at the 2:23 mark, sending a header from the near post to the back of the net. It marked her fifth goal of 2012.

CPP put together one of its best chances in the 10th minute when seniors Veronica Ramos and Angela Garcia worked a give-and-go before a shot from Garcia was stopped by UCSD keeper Kelcie Brodsky. Minutes later, the Tritons pushed their lead to 2-0 when Britnee Chesney lined a low shot into the left corner of the net from about 15 yards out.

In the 19th minute, a loose ball rolled into the 18-yard box and Broncos' goalkeeper Sarah Rohman tried to slide and control it. The ball bounced loose and Tritons' forward Jessica Wi won possession and lined a shot into the empty net. UCSD added its fourth score of the first half at the 42:35 mark, when Hayley Johnson sent a long shot in from the left side.

The two teams took seven shots apiece through the first 45 minutes but the 4-0 margin pointed in the visitors' favor. The intensity of the CPP offense increased drastically in the second half, as the Broncos outshot the Tritons 13-3 in the final period.

Less than two minutes in, a UCSD defender pulled down a CPP player in the box and the Broncos were awarded a penalty kick. The attempt from Ramos sailed to the right of the frame though, keeping the score at 4-0.

The Broncos eventually got on the board in the 59th minute after Aneska Alino stole the ball in the right corner of the field, dribbled into the box and fired a shot past Brodsky. It marked goal No. 2 of the season for Alino and No. 5 of her career.

Just as CPP built up momentum, the Tritons rallied for a fifth goal in the 69th minute. Reserve player Gabi Hernandez lofted a long shot from the right side and although Rohman got a glove on it, the ball bounced across the line to make it a 5-1 score. Two Bronco newcomers, Mindy Castro and Tatiana Cortes, logged their first career minutes Friday and played well.

Up next, the Broncos will return to action Sunday for a 2 p.m. home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
