POMONA, Calif. – Searching for its first conference goal and first conference win of 2012, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team accomplished both feats Friday in an exciting 2-1 home victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The result improves the Broncos' marks to 3-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Otters remain winless at 0-7-0 overall and 0-6-0 in league action.
Both teams took 15 shots each in the tightly-contested match, although the Broncos put more attempts on target with seven shots on goal as opposed to CSUMB's two.
CPP broke through for a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, when redshirt freshman
Juso Ahmetspahic tallied his first career goal with a sharp shot from four yards out off of a long throw-in by junior
Matt Boudreau.
Ahmetspahic and Boudreau entered the game just 95 seconds before combining for the Broncos' first conference goal of the season. A native of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ahmetspahic had played just 35 minutes of action through CPP's first seven matches of 2012 before earning 18 Friday to go along with the clutch goal.
The Broncos' 1-0 advantage remained intact until about midway through the second period. The Otters found the equalizer at the 69:01 mark on a play that started with Aaron Kochman serving a cross into the box from the left side. As CPP senior netminder
Kris Minton tried to intercept the pass, the ball bounced out of his hands to CSUMB forward Servando Perez at the far post. Perez deposited a shot from about seven yards out to even the score at 1-1.
Looking to ensure that their first conference win wouldn't slip out of grasp, the Broncos' offense stepped up the pressure once again in the late stages of the second half. Through most of the game, CPP's long throw-ins helped create scoring chances and it brought results again in the 79th minute.
Redshirt junior
Jesus Mitre sent a long toss from the left side and
Christopher Rosales tipped the ball along to another teammate,
Abraham Gomez. With the Otters' goalkeeper slightly out of position, Gomez aimed and fired the ball into the back of the net to give CPP a 2-1 lead. It marked the fourth goal of 2012 for Gomez, a senior midfielder from Chula Vista.
The Broncos will now shift their focus to a Sunday 11:30 a.m. matchup against San Francisco State. The Gators head to Pomona with marks of 1-6-2 overall and 0-4-2 in conference play.
