SEASIDE, Calif. – One night after going five games in a win at Cal State East Bay, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team couldn't keep up with Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday in a 3-0 road loss.
The Otters outplayed the Broncos on defense, maintaining a 61-45 lead in digs while holding the visiting CPP squad to a .186 hitting percentage.
Broncos' junior outside hitter
Jessica Doerner put together a stellar offensive performance, collecting eight kills while committing just one error.
The loss drops CPP's marks to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while CSUMB improves to 8-6 overall and 2-4 through conference play.
The Otters set the tone for the match early in the first game, jumping out to a 5-0 edge to start.
Later in the frame though, the Broncos put together a run of points behind strong serving by
Erin Noriega and
Kelly Bonja. CPP pulled to within 21-18 on a combined block from Doerner and
Taylr Kreutziger but the host squad managed to hold on for a 25-20 win.
The second game played out in a much closer fashion from start to finish. CSUMB held a narrow 15-14 advantage before the Broncos rattled off four-straight points, including the last two on block assists that feature Kreutziger in both instances.
The Otters called a timeout and then reeled off three-consecutive points of their own to tie the game at 18-18. The score moved into a tie five more times in the frame, including 24-24 in a pivotal moment for the match. CSUMB's Julia Ashen delivered with back-to-back kills and she finished with a match-high 17 through the evening.
The third game also proved to be closely-contested. CPP staked a 5-2 lead early, with freshman
Nicoletta Stork capping off the rally with a kill and two service aces. The Otters responded with a 5-0 run and the back-and-forth of the third frame began. Two-straight kills from Kreutziger evened the score at 17-17 but CSUMB once again closed out strong, going 8-4 in the final stretch to wrap up the sweep.
The Broncos will return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State L.A. It'll be "Pack the Stands" night at Kellogg Gym, with plenty of promotions for CPP fans attending.
