Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Soccer fans at Kellogg Field witnessed a hard-fought match Friday night but Chico State outmatched Cal Poly Pomona offensively in the second half to take a 2-0 victory.
The Broncos and Wildcats remained scoreless through 68 minutes but Chico continued to build up pressure on the attack and broke through for the pair of goals.
With the result, CPP falls to 5-4-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Wildcats, receiving votes in the Division II Top 25 poll, improve to 9-2 overall and 7-2 through league play.
After taking a 0-0 tie into halftime, the Broncos got one of their best chances in the 50th minute. Off of a header deflection by
Ian Trantow, the ball bounced to
Abiel Coronado. The junior midfielder set up and lined a hard shot that curled just to the left of the far post.
The Wildcats got on the board at the 68:03 mark with the play initiated on a free kick from Octavio Guzman. The first chance caromed off to Tyson Crim, who deposited it across the line to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In the 84th minute, Chico got an insurance goal as a rebound chance went to Kramer Runager and he capitalized to give the Wildcats a 2-0 edge.
In putting Friday's result behind them, the Broncos will return to action Sunday for a 2 p.m. home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
