Box Score | SAN FRANCISCO – After three-consecutive matches lasting three sets apiece, Cal Poly Pomona was due for a bit of extra volleyball on Saturday night at San Francisco State.
The Broncos started this week's Northern California trip with a 3-0 sweep of Humboldt State on Wednesday before falling to Sonoma State Friday in straight sets.
CPP capped off the road swing with a back-and-forth match Saturday in San Francisco. After the two teams traded sets through the first four frames, the Broncos pulled out a 3-2 win with a narrow 15-12 result in the final set as
Nicoletta Stork ended the match with an ace.
Senior
Katie Colin recorded her second double-double performance of the season, collecting 25 assists and 10 digs to go along with four kills on seven attempts.
Christen Williams also put together a solid all-around effort, notching 12 kills and seven blocks with an career-high attack percentage of .526.
The Broncos demonstrated Saturday why they're the top-rated blocking team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP tallied 15 blocks, the second-highest total for the team this season.
Alexa Hasen matched Williams with seven while
Jessica Doerner and Stork added five apiece. Doerner and Stork also served well on Saturday as both picked up three aces, including two from Stork in the fifth set.
The Broncos and Gators pushed out to a 16-16 tie in the first set before the Broncos closed out the frame strong and finished with the 25-21 result. Colin played a key role in that opening set as she racked up six assists and three kills, including the decisive one on point No. 25.
The Gators jumped out to a 4-0 edge in the second set and although CPP pulled to within 14-13 with a
Lauren Jones kill, SFSU built up its momentum again later and finished with a sizeable 25-17 result to even the match at 1-1.
The third set proved to be very evenly matched as there were 16 different instances of a tie score. Doerner helped the Broncos take a narrow 25-23 win in that frame as she tallied three kills and an ace in the team's final six points.
CPP held a 19-16 lead in the fourth set but the Gators rallied late, closing out the frame on a 9-3 run to force a fifth set. In the final frame, Doerner broke a 2-2 tie with a kill and Stork knocked in an ace to give the Broncos a 5-2 edge. CPP kept the lead for the rest of the set and four-straight serves from
Samantha Cramer helped the visitors widen the margin.
CPP- 5-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play - will return to Pomona to start a three-match homestand that'll begin Thursday with a 7 p.m. match against Chico State.
