Abbott Helps Broncos Play to 0-0 Tie Against Coyotes

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Despite putting nine shots on goal and Alex Abbott collecting several key stops, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team couldn't get on the scoreboard and ended up playing to a 0-0 draw Sunday with 25th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino.

It marked the seventh overtime contest for the Broncos this season, the highest total for the program since 2007. CPP now holds records of 5-3-4 overall and 3-3-4 in conference play.

Winless in the last three matches, the Broncos have fallen to third in the South Division and sixth overall in points for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Coyotes remain in first place within the Broncos' division.

CPP's homestand will continue Friday with a 4:30 p.m. match against Cal State L.A. as part of a "Pack the Stands" event at Kellogg Field. The first 200 students to arrive will receive free t-shirts.

Both the Broncos and Coyotes had plenty of chances to score Sunday. CSUSB got its first big chance in the 18th minute on a Carissa Kutkowski corner kick. The ball was flicked by Jasmine Williams on to Jill Wierzbicki, who lined a shot just over the crossbar.

Just a few minutes later, CPP got a great scoring opportunity on a corner kick from Samantha Stiles. A header by Monica Quila on that play would have crossed the line if it weren't for last-second clear from Coyotes' midfielder Susan Ibarra.

The visitors nearly got on the scoreboard at the 55:50 mark when Williams ripped a hard shot to the right side of the net. Abbott, a sophomore goalkeeper from San Diego, made a spectacular diving save to keep the score at 0-0.

Williams was stopped again by Abbott just a couple minutes into overtime, with the netminder leaping up high to knock a shot out of harm's way.

In total, Abbott made three saves while San Bernardino goalkeeper Chelsey Jones made eight. It marked the third shutout for Abbott this season. Alison Sauve led CPP in shots Sunday with four, including three that were on target.
