Kisslan, Stiles Score as Broncos and Tritons Tie 2-2

Box Score | LA JOLLA, Calif. – A familiar result has left Cal Poly Pomona in an unfavorable position. The Broncos are needing wins in the chase for a playoff berth and after a 2-2 draw Sunday at UC San Diego, CPP is four points out of a postseason spot with four games to play.

Nonetheless, Sunday's result gives the Broncos a hard-fought point on the road and it keeps UCSD close in the standings. The 2-2 finish marks the fifth draw of 2013 for CPP, a total that now stands as the new program record. Eight of the team's 14 matches have gone to overtime.

The Broncos, with a 5-4-5 overall record and a 3-4-5 mark in conference play, have 14 points in the standings while Cal State Stanislaus (32 points), Sonoma State (24), Cal State San Bernardino (23) and Cal State L.A. (18) lead the way.

With important standing points on the line and both CPP and the Tritons evenly matched Sunday, the leads didn't last very long as both sides responded quickly after giving up goals.

Even with four scores going up on the board, the Broncos and UCSD were tied for just about 107 of the 110 minutes played. UCSD went up 1-0 at the 27:53 mark before CPP got the equalizer at 29:09. The Broncos took their first lead at 67:49, only to see the Tritons even the tally at 2-2 at 69:39.

The visiting CPP squad earned its first goal on a set piece. Senior Kristin Mihara lined a corner kick into the box, where Megan Kisslan sent a header just across the line to tie the game at 1-1. The play marked Mihara's third career assist and Kisslan's second career goal.

The Broncos' second score came in the 68th minute, when junior Arika Ontiveros initiated the play by driving the ball into the right corner. Although a UCSD player got to it first, senior Samantha Stiles stole the ball away and curved a shot inside the upper left corner of the net to collect her 11th career goal.

Competing in her first match since Sept. 20, CPP senior goalkeeper Sarah Rohman recorded six saves to match her season high and move into third in the Broncos' all-time record book. On the opposite side of the field, Tritons' netminder Kelcie Brodsky totaled seven stops.

With their regular season road schedule completed, the Broncos will return home to host Cal State Monterey Bay Friday. Four regular season games are left, all four will be played at Kellogg Field and once those are done, the top four California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams will advance to the conference championships.
