James Scores Late to Lift Broncos in 1-0 Home Win

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – With Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay locked in a scoreless battle, Friday's match at Kellogg Field appeared to be headed into overtime.

Freshman Hailey James got the Broncos on the board in the 81st minute and the CPP defense came up with key stops down the stretch to give the host squad a huge 1-0 win over the Otters.

It marked the first career score for James, who is one of four first-year Bronco student-athletes to tally a goal so far in 2013. A Glendale native, James has started in each of the last three games.

Friday's victory is career win No. 250 for CPP head coach Mike Dibbini, who recorded 244 while at Kansas Wesleyan. With a 4-4-5 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and three regular season games remaining, the Broncos (17 points) have moved into third place in the South Division.

CPP also ranks fifth overall in the conference and once the regular season ends, the top four teams will advance to the CCAA Championships in Turlock.

The Broncos are now in a three-way tie for fifth with UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay. CPP will host the Gators of SF State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match.

Currently holding the fourth and final spot for the CCAA Championships is Cal State L.A., a squad that topped Cal State San Bernardino Friday and now will travel to play Chico State Sunday.

On Friday at Kellogg Field, the Broncos and Otters each had exciting scoring opportunities throughout the match. Less than three minutes into the opening half, Hannah Leu placed a shot past CSUMB goalkeeper Kendra Gillio but the ball was cleared at the line by an Otters' player.

Midway through that first period, CSUMB's Jami Murray lined a shot that CPP netminder Alex Abbott deflected diving to her left. The ball rolled quickly off the post and across the goalmouth before eventually being cleared.

The decisive play came in the 81st minute when a long pass was sent into the box. The ball bounced off of Gillio and just moments later, James charged in and tapped the ball across the line to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

The win marked the first CCAA home victory this season for the Broncos, who have previously set the school record for draws with five. CPP has seven shutouts, including the fourth for Abbott on Friday.

The Otters finished with a 14-9 edge in shots during the match. To this point in the 2013 season, all six of the Broncos' wins have come by 1-0 results.
