Volleyball Completes Regular Season Sweep of Toros

Box Score | CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team collected its second sweep of the season Saturday, defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills in straight sets.

The Broncos'  offense was extra efficient against the Toros as CPP recorded a hitting percentage of .307, the team's highest mark so far in 2013. Junior middle blocker Elle Moffatt played a key role in that success with 12 kills while hitting .500 individually.

The winning result moves the Broncos' marks to 9-13 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With CPP capturing wins in six of its last eight matches, the team has the fifth-most victories in the conference standings. The Broncos are also now 2-0 this season against Dominguez Hills.

CPP collected eight service aces Saturday, one shy of matching the season best. Tatiana Martinez recorded back-to-back aces to end the match in the third set. Nicoletta Stork served in three of her own and also contributed a team-high 15 assists. Jessica Doerner supported Moffatt in leading the offense as the senior registered 10 kills while hitting .308.

One night after a 34-32 first-set loss at Cal State L.A., the Broncos were on the right side of a 26-24 result in the opening frame against the Toros. Stork broke a 24-24 tie with a kill off a Martinez assist and then Doerner provided the decisive kill, one of six for her in that first set.

The second frame didn't get any easier with CPP trailing 22-21 late. Key plays late in the set were a combined block from Doerner, Moffatt and Alexa Hasen to give the Broncos a 24-22 edge and then a Moffatt kill to finish the 25-23 result.

In the third set, Dominguez Hills turned a 20-16 deficit into a 20-18 margin and then CPP decided to call a timeout. The break seemed to help the Broncos, who reeled off a 5-0 run to finish the match. Moffatt picked up two kills in that spurt and Martinez notched her two aces on the final two points.

CPP returns to Kellogg Gym to host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday at 7 p.m. The Otters, at 7-6, are directly above the Broncos in the standings.
