Broncos Give Wegrich Career Win No. 700 on Birthday

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Birthday balloons don't always come with career win No. 700. But that's exactly what Rosie Wegrich got from her Broncos on Thursday.

Cal Poly Pomona defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 and it marked the 700th career coaching victory for Wegrich, who ranks fifth among active Division II coaches and shares her birthday with the Halloween holiday.

Wegrich started her 39 years of collegiate coaching at Minnesota, where she picked up 71 wins. From there, her Arizona stint featured 258 victories. Here at Cal Poly Pomona, she's racked up 371.

Wegrich's 2013 team has now won seven of its last nine matches to move into sixth place in the conference standings. Senior Katie Colin played a key role in the milestone win Thursday as she collected 51 assists to help her teammates hit .261 with 64 kills.

Christen Williams put together an impressive performance offensively, knocking in 13 kills to go along with a career-best hitting percentage of .550. Jessica Doerner, Brianna Thierjung and Alexa Hasen joined Williams with double-digit kill totals Thursday. Thierjung's 12 kills also marked a career high.

The Otters jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the opening set before the Broncos rallied for a 4-0 run to close the gap. Elle Moffatt played a key role in that stretch as she collected a kill and a service ace. The visiting Monterey Bay squad took control of the set once again though as Jessica Malcolm tallied five kills and five digs, helping the Otters take a 25-17 result.

The Broncos elevated their level of play in the second set with Hasen and Doerner leading the attack. Erin Noriega knocked in a service aces to push the CPP advantage to 18-13 but later in the frame, Monterey managed to even the score at 22-22 and 23-23. Doerner broke that tie and for the decisive point, Williams fired a kill straight down to the floor for the 25-23 result.

The host Broncos rolled out to a 4-0 lead to start the third set as Thierjung provided some consistent serving. CPP pushed its lead to 12-2 with Williams providing a huge lift for the offense as she recorded three kills and a block in a five-point span. The momentum carried through the entire set with the Broncos cruising to a 25-13 result while taking a 2-1 lead in sets.

Thierjung starred offensively in the fourth set as she registered five kills through that final frame, including the last point of the match. Fellow sophomore Zoe Herrera continued to play well defensively and she finished with a team-high 24 digs.

CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State East Bay.
