Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – After collecting seven wins in October, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team encountered a tough start to November Saturday as the Broncos dropped a 3-0 result to Cal State East Bay at Kellogg Gym.
The Pioneers brought a powerful attack and stellar serving to Saturday's match as they finished with a hitting percentage of .250 and eight service aces. Leading the Broncos' defensive efforts on the back row were
Zoe Herrera and
Tatiana Martinez. Martinez finished with a season-best 15 digs Saturday.
Early in the opening set, senior
Katie Colin capitalized on her teammates' passing with three kills from the setter position on her first three attempts. With the score at 9-9, CPP broke a long rally when
Jessica Doerner and
Elle Moffatt combined for a block on the Pioneers' Suzy Ni Xu hitting off the right side.
The Broncos' offense appeared somewhat out of sync though and a balanced attack from East Bay carried the visitors through the rest of the set as the Pioneers got a 25-19 result to take a 1-0 lead in sets.
Sophomore
Christen Williams came in swinging for CPP in the second set as she tallied three quick kills. The Broncos pushed out to a 9-6 lead but East Bay quickly reversed the momentum with a 12-4 run to take an 18-13 advantage. The Pioneers maintained a similar edge until wrapping up the frame at 25-19.
The third set opened with a block from Williams and two points later, she lined a kill straight to the floor. It provided a change of pace for CPP but East Bay rallied, helped once again by service aces. Two from Amber Hall were part of a 5-0 run for the Pioneers, who cruised to a 25-14 result in the third set.
With six regular season matches remaining, the Broncos will face two nationally-ranked opponents on the road next week. On Friday, CPP plays at Cal State San Bernardino with a 7 p.m. first serve. In last week's Division II Top 25 poll, the Coyotes held the No. 13 spot.
