Broncos Put Together Late Rally But Fall Sunday, 2-1

Box Score | TURLOCK, Calif. – A late rally fell short for the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team Sunday as the Broncos suffered a 2-1 loss at Cal State Stanislaus.

CPP allowed a goal in the 14th minute and despite outshooting the Warriors 11-2 in the second half, the Broncos gave up another score at the 75:58 mark.

In the 88th minute, CPP finally converted on one of its many chances. Jose Ortega sent a long pass upfield to Brandon Cortez, who lifted a shot over the head of Stanislaus goalie Clint Long charging in.

It proved to be too little and too late for the Broncos, who fall to 5-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

This marks the halfway point of the regular season and although CPP has some ground to make up in the South Division race, the Broncos will play seven of their final eight matches at home. Next up is a Friday night game at Kellogg Field against Chico State.

On Sunday in Turlock, CPP finished with an 18-7 edge in shots through the 90 minutes and took seven corner kicks in the second half.

The Warriors struck first though with the scoring play starting on a cross from Carlos Gavino. A Broncos' defender tried to clear the ball but the attempt was unsuccesful as Manny Villegas stopped it and then lined a shot past CPP goalkeeper Andrew Todd at the 13:23 mark.

The host Stanislaus squad got an insurance goal in the 76th minute when a corner kick caromed off a Broncos' player to Carlos Navarrete, who placed the ball easily across the line to push the lead to 2-0.

CPP got its lone goal of the match with Ortega delivering a nice pass to Cortez for a fine finish at the 87:11 mark. For Cortez, it marked his sixth score of the season as he continues to rank second in the CCAA for goals.
