Box Score | ARCATA, Calif. – Winning quickly and efficiently is always nice, especially at the start of a busy week.
The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team accomplished that Wednesday in Arcata with a fast 3-0 win over Humboldt State to notch the team's first sweep of 2013.
The result snaps a five-match losing streak and moves the Broncos up two spots in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings at 2-5 in conference play.
With three matches in a span of four days, CPP will next challenge nationally-ranked Sonoma State at 7 p.m. Friday in Rohnert Park.
The Broncos had all aspects of their game working on Wednesday at HSU. With a .248-.149 edge in hitting percentage, CPP also collected 10 team blocks and tallied five aces while committing just one service error.
Three Broncos posted hitting percentages of .333 or more on Wednesday, including senior
Jessica Doerner with a team-high 12 kills.
Lauren Jones added nine kills while
Alexa Hasen collected seven without committing an attack error.
Nicoletta Stork and
Katie Colin starred in setting with assist totals of 24 and 10 respectively.
Zoe Herrera paced the team in digs with 19 and ended the match with a service ace. Of the squad's 20 block assists, six came from Hasen.
The first set ended at 25-23 and that was the closest ending margin of the night with the other two frames finishing at 25-19 and 25-18. In the first, CPP got an ace from
Erin Noriega to break a 22-22 tie and key kills from Doerner and
Brianna Thierjung allowed the Broncos to take a 1-0 lead in sets.
Doerner served well late in the second set and Thierjung once again proved to be clutch on the attack, getting three kills in CPP's final six points of that frame. The third and final set remained close until the later stages, when Stork put together a modest serving run and Jones played well on the attack.
With the victory on Wednesday, the Broncos now own a 16-match winning streak against the Jacks. Friday's opponent - the Seawolves of SSU - were also in action on Wednesday. Sonoma topped San Francisco State, 3-0, to win its sixth-consecutive match.
