Box Score | ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team kept the scores close through the first two sets Friday at Sonoma State but eventually fell in straight sets to the nationally-ranked Seawolves.
The Broncos are now 1-1 on this week's trip through Northern California and CPP will wrap up the road swing with a 7 p.m. Saturday match at San Francisco State.
Although the Broncos got six solo blocks Friday, including three from
Christen Williams, CPP couldn't stop the SSU attack. Calan Seitz led the host squad with 17 of the team's 44 kills.
Three Broncos tallied 10 or more digs Friday with
Zoe Herrera,
Brianna Thierjung and
Jessica Doerner in that category. CPP dropped the first two frames by 25-23 and 25-20 margins before falling behind quickly in a 25-11 third set.
In the opening frame,
Lauren Jones fired in a kill to give the Broncos a 15-14 edge. A Seawolves' attack error gave CPP the lead again at 16-15 but the SSU offense warmed up and closed out strong in the 25-23 result.
The second set also went back and forth between the two teams and the Broncos pulled to within 15-14 before the Seawolves put together a 5-0 run to take control and eventually get the 25-20 result.
Through Friday's match, Jones and
Alexa Hasen collected seven kills apiece to pace the CPP attack.
