Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team stopped its three-match losing streak Thursday as the Broncos put together a strong performance to top San Francisco State at Kellogg Gym, 3-1.
With Thursday's win, CPP finishes the season series against the Gators at 2-0. Overall, the Broncos are 11-16 this season and 9-10 in confernce play.
CPP will play its final home match of the 2013 season on Saturday with a 7 p.m. first serve against No. 16 Sonoma State. Just before the match starts, the Broncos will hold a Senior Night ceremony for
Katie Colin,
Jessica Doerner and
Erin Noriega.
All three seniors played well Thursday in leading CPP to victory. Colin had 47 assists, Doerner tallied 14 kills and Noriega contributed nine digs. Sophomore
Christen Williams also starred Thursday as she recorded a career-high 16 kills while hitting .500.
The four-set match was close from start to finish with each frame decided by five points or less.
The Broncos trailed 21-18 in the opening set but with Colin putting together four-straight serves and Williams delivering three kills in that span, CPP rallied for the 25-22 result. Williams notched six of her 16 kills in that first frame.
The visiting SFSU squad once again held a late lead in the second set, taking a 22-20 edge on a Meagan Wright kill. Sophomore
Alexa Hasen fired in a kill to reverse some of the momentum and two Gators' errors turned the lead back over to the Broncos, 23-22.
A Doerner kill off a Colin assist gave CPP an opportunity for set point at 24-23 and from there,
Brianna Thierjung and Hasen delivered with a block to give the Broncos a 25-23 result.
It appeared the Gators would fall into a similar trap in the third set but once CPP turned a 22-19 deficit into a 22-21 nailbiter, the visitors rattled off three-straight points - including two kills from Kelly Ostello - to capture a 25-21 win that trimmed the set lead to 2-1.
The Gators opened the fourth set on a 6-5 lead but long serving runs from
Tatiana Martinez and Doerner helped the Broncos pull away. Thierjung and Hasen continued to help the CPP attack and they finished with nine kills apiece Thursday while
Zoe Herrera tallied a team-high 22 digs.
