Despite Late Rally, Broncos Fall 3-1 on Senior Night

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Before Saturday's match at Kellogg Gym against nationally-ranked Sonoma State, Cal Poly Pomona volleyball honored the careers of seniors Katie Colin, Jessica Doerner and Erin Noriega. To view video of the complete Senior Night festivities, click here.

Through the match, the Bronco Pep Band led a spirited Senior Night crowd in supporting the Broncos as they tried to make a late rally.

With Colin sending up stellar setting and a pair of sophomores combining for 31 kills, the Broncos fought back from a 2-0 deficit to nearly force a fifth frame.

The visiting Seawolves' squad - ranked No. 16 at the NCAA Division II level - closed out the fourth set on a 4-0 run though to secure the 3-1 victory in CPP's final home match of 2013. Leading the SSU attack was Caylie Seitz, who finished with a match-best 20 kills.

Second-year players Alexa Hasen and Christen Williams led the Broncos' offense Saturday in the pressure-packed match. Hasen collected 17 kills on .429 hitting while Williams delivered 14 kills on .500 hitting to go along with six blocks.

Colin finished with 45 assists and 10 digs as Saturday is the third-consecutive match she's reached the 45-assist mark. Elle Moffatt matched Williams' six blocks while Zoe Herrera contributed 19 digs.

CPP put together a late run in the opening frame as the Broncos got a pair of combined blocks from Moffatt and Williams to cut the Seawolves' lead to 23-22. SSU won the next two points though, including a Hayley Ross service ace to wrap up the 25-22 result.

The Seawolves had an easier time in the second set, cruising out to an 18-10 edge before taking the frame 25-17. That put SSU in front 2-0 in sets going into the extended break.

The Broncos played extremely well in the third set and an ace from Hasen put CPP ahead 20-18 and forced a timeout from the Seawolves. Colin actually served nine times for the Broncos in the fourth, including an ace of her own to tie the score at 22-22. Williams provided kills on two of CPP's final five points and on the decisive one, Colin tallied a kill while fellow senior Doerner earned the assist.

The host squad continued to build momentum in the fourth, extending its lead to 17-12 off a Hannah Harrer kill. A Williams kill put the Broncos in front 21-16 as CPP pulled closer to forcing a fifth and final set. The Seawolves put together a 9-1 run to end the fourth though as Kelsey Hull delivered three kills in the final four points to end the match.

The Broncos will travel to play Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State next weekend to conclude the 2013 regular season.
