Despite Early Lead, Volleyball Falls to Coyotes 3-1

Box Score | SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead Friday at No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino but the Broncos couldn't hold on to that advantage and eventually fell 3-1.

Sophomore Brianna Thierjung put together an impressive performance despite the tough result for the team. The Corona native recorded her first career double-double performance with 17 digs and 15 digs while setting new career highs in both statistics.

CPP totaled 84 digs while the host squad recorded 82 but the Coyotes outblocked the Broncos 12-9 and outhit the visitors as well, .199 to .095.

Despite falling into a 18-9 deficit in the opening set, CPP rallied to capture a 25-23 result. That 16-5 run to finish the set featured a strong finish from Alexa Hasen and Megan Byrne.

Trailing 23-22, Hasen and Byrne combined for a block to even the score and force a Coyotes' timeout. Hasen contributed a kill after the break and Byrne followed with a kill of her own. Both attack attempts came with assists from Katie Colin.

In the second set, CPP managed to take a 24-22 lead to pull within one point of taking a 2-0 edge in sets. The Coyotes rallied for a 4-0 run though and evened the set count at one apiece.

San Bernardino captured wins in the third and fourth frames with relative ease, taking the third 25-13 and the fourth 25-19. Alexandra Torline paced the Coyotes' attack with 21 kills.

Colin put together a solid all-around performance for CPP as she collected 36 assists to go along with 10 digs. Two of Erin Noriega's nine serves fell for aces.

The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. road match at No. 12 UC San Diego.
