Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a big 69-41 win over Cal State San Bernardino Tuesday at Kellogg Gym as the Broncos shot 48.1 percent and never trailed in the contest.
CPP outscored the Coyotes 37-18 in the second half and kept the lead in double digits for the final 15 minutes of the contest.
The Broncos, receiving votes just outside the top 25 nationally, are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Coyotes fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Broncos haven't been outrebounded yet this season and that trend continued Tuesday at home with CPP holding a 39-37 edge on the boards.
Junior center
Jada Blackwell nearly notched her second double-double of the season, ending Tuesday's win with 16 points and eight rebounds. Fellow third-year student-athletes
Ariel Marsh and
Ashley Lovett joined Blackwell in double figures with respective point totals of 13 and 11.
While the Broncos' offense heated up in the second half, the Coyotes' attack continued to struggle. Through the 40 minutes of action, San Bernardino shot 27.6 percent from the field and 7-for-14 from the free throw line.
CPP jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first five minutes as Blackwell scored four of those points. Senior
J.J. Judge knocked down a jumper later in the half to start a 9-0 run for the Broncos, who took a 32-23 edge into halftime.
Another key for the CPP squad was winning the turnover battle, which they've also achieved in each of the first four games this season. Judge set the tone as a playmaker and finished with a career-high five assists.
The Broncos' defense ramped up its intensity early in the second half, limiting San Bernardino to just two points through the first nine and a half minutes in the closing period. The CPP victory was certainly a team effort as 10 Broncos scored. Blackwell and
Ashley Lovett were perfect at the free throw line as Blackwell knocked down all four of her attempts and Lovett went 5-for-5.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday as they'll host Merrimack at 3 p.m. at Kellogg Gym.
