Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team withstood a late rally from No. 18 Simon Fraser Friday to pick up a heart-pumping 66-64 victory in the season opener at Kellogg Gym.
Making her Bronco debut,
Jada Blackwell dropped in the decisive basket in the final minute to break a 64-64 tie. From there, the CPP defense made two big stops to secure the win and move to 1-0, while Broncos' head coach
Danelle Bishop picked up her career coaching victory No. 200.
Blackwell collected a team-high 18 points on 9-for-15 shooting while adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in 36 minutes of action. The Broncos outrebounded SFU, 47-42, as sophomore
Cydnie Jones matched her career high with 11 boards.
CPP held a 36-29 lead at halftime and pushed the margin to 12 on a Jones layup with 12:16 to play in the game. The visiting squad put together an impressive rally though as SFU went 8-for-16 from beyond the arc through the final 20 minutes.
Rebecca Langmead also proved to be a force for Simon Fraser in the paint as she recorded a double-double in the season opener with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Ariel Marsh and Blackwell came out firing for the Broncos at the start of the contest. The duo combined for all of the team's first 11 points.
Facing a 20-19 deficit late in the first half, CPP put together a 9-0 run spearheaded by
Tyler Woods and Marsh, who intiatied the spurt on a layup after a Jones assist. Woods then knocked down a pair of baskets, including her first career three-pointer as a Bronco.
Although CPP ended up shooting just 1-for-14 from three-point range and 7-for-11 from the line, the Broncos made up for it with strong rebounding and efficient passing.
CPP racked up 20 assists as a team, none more important than the one Woods provided for Blackwell into the paint for the decisive basket with 51 seconds on the clock. Last year, the Broncos reached the 20 assist mark just once.
Through the 40 minutes of action Friday, Marsh and Woods joined Blackwell in double figures with point totals of 13 and 10 respectively.
The same two squads will battle once against Saturday with a 4 p.m. tipoff at Kellogg Gym.
