Box Score | LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team held a 2-1 lead on the road at No. 12 UC San Diego Saturday but the Tritons rallied to capture a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
The Broncos suffered the same 3-2 result earlier in the year to UCSD, a squad that is now 22-3 overall and 14-3 in conference play. CPP returns to action Thursday with a home match against San Francisco State before Saturday's Senior Day event with Sonoma State visiting Kellogg Gym.
Sophomores
Alexa Hasen and
Christen Williams powered the Broncos' attack Saturday and also contributed plenty of blocks defensively. Hasen racked up a career-high 17 kills to go along with four block assists while Williams collected 14 kills and a team-high five block assists.
Fellow second-year player
Zoe Herrera registered a career-high 30 digs while senior
Katie Colin tallied 49 assists.
CPP dropped the first set 25-14 but put that result behind and took the next two frames, 25-17 and 25-23. The Tritons stormed back though, finishing the match with 25-15 and 15-10 results.
In the closest frame - set No. 3 - the Broncos extended their lead to 24-21 with a kill from Williams. UCSD scored the next two points to force a CPP timeout. The Broncos returned to the floor and Williams knocked in another kill to take the 25-23 win.
Caitlin Brenton led the Tritons' comeback victory though as she registered 27 kills and 14 digs for an all-around solid performance.
