Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 73-64 loss Saturday to No. 18 Simon Fraser at Kellogg Gym, splitting the regular season series as the squads played matchups on back-to-back nights to open the 2013-14 campaign.
Both teams now hold records of 1-1 so far this year. The Broncos will return to action next Saturday with their first road game of the season, a 3 p.m. matchup at Azusa Pacific.
Junior center
Jada Blackwell turned in another impressive performance as she tallied her first double-double effort as a Bronco with 21 points and 18 rebounds, a total just five shy of the school record.
As a team though, CPP shot just 33.3 percent from the field and 3-for-19 from beyond the arc. Four SFU players scored in double figures and Erin Chambers led the squad with 21 points.
Much like Friday's matchup, CPP and Simon Fraser traded leads throughout the first half. Senior guard
J.J. Judge got into a rhythm offensively as she knocked down her first three-pointer of the year at the 12:06 mark. That basket moved her into a tie for sixth all-time in the program record book for three-pointers made.
With the score tied 15-15, junior forward
Ashley Lovett hit a running jumper along the baseline to give the Broncos a two-point edge with that being the fourth lead change of the contest.
After Judge evened the score at 28-28, SFU's Chambers tossed in a trey with 55 seconds to play in the half. With just a few ticks left on the clock,
Ariel Marsh dropped in a tough-angle shot to pull CPP to within 31-30 going into the break.
The visiting SFU squad opened the second half on 13-0 run as Chambers continued to shoot well. The Broncos broke their scoring drought at the 13:55 mark when Blackwell knocked down a layup in the lane, drew a foul and sank the free throw for the three-point play.
CPP cut the gap to seven points on five different occasions but couldn't get any closer than that until the 54-second mark, when Blackwell backed up beyond the arc and knocked down a three-pointer. SFU hit enough of its free throws to keep it a two-possession game while eventually picking up the 73-64 victory.
