Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – With a terrific shooting performance led by
Ariel Marsh, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team captured a 78-67 victory over UC San Diego Saturday at Kellogg Gym.
The Broncos shot 58.5 percent, the highest mark through the four-year tenure of head coach
Danelle Bishop. Four CPP players scored in double figures, including a 24-point effort by Marsh. She knocked down six three-pointers, one shy of matching her career high.
The result improves the Broncos' marks to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), extending CPP's win streak to four games while snapping the Tritons' streak at the same length.
The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start of Saturday's game. Marsh knocked down a three-pointer on the opening possession and layups from
Jada Blackwell and
Cydnie Jones followed.
Marsh led a balanced CPP offense through the early going and senior
J.J. Judge found her shooting rhythm later in the first half as she tallied a team-high 13 points through the opening 20 minutes.
A Judge three-pointer at the 3:18 mark started an 11-0 run for the host squad and it also gave Judge career point No. 700. The Broncos' defense delivered in a big way, forcing 12 turnovers from the Tritons and turning them into 21 points.
UCSD opened the second half a bit stronger, putting together an 8-2 run to trim the margin down to 14 points. The closest that the Tritons would get in the second half was a 10-point gap, achieved on a Miranda Seto trey at the 8:26 mark.
The Broncos put together a 31-26 edge in rebounding through the game and that helped distance the host squad from UCSD.
Blackwell and Jones also proved to be key contributors in the win. Sinking seven of her 11 attempts from the field, Blackwell totaled 16 points. Jones delivered in many different areas, totaling 11 points, eight rebounds and a career-best five assists.
Judge knocked down three treys, moving her career total of three-pointers to 109 as she holds sixth place on the program's all-time leaderboard for that statistic.
For the Tritons (5-2, 2-1 CCAA), Megan Perry also put together a stellar performance from beyond the arc. She knocked down five three-pointers and after going 10-for-14 from the floor, finished with a game-high 25 points.
CPP will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 14, for a 5:30 p.m. home game against Humboldt State. The Jacks are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
