LOS ANGELES - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Cal State L.A. as the Broncos fell 9-3 in the first game and 3-0 in the series finale.
With the results, CPP drops to 10-5 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Golden Eagles now hold marks of 9-6 overall and 7-1 in league action.
The Broncos' bullpen performed well in the first contest and
Kevin Bosson contributed a solid start in the second game but the CPP offense struggled to keep up with L.A.'s lineup.
The Broncos will return to action Thursday when they start a four-game series against UC San Diego. The two squads will play single nine-inning games in La Jolla on Thursday and Friday before concluding the series with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field Saturday.
Game 1 Box Score | Golden Eagles 9, Broncos 3
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings in the first half of the doubleheader and three of those runs came as unearned against Broncos' starting right-hander
Erick Ruvalcaba.
Jeremy Weber, who ended up 2-for-4 in the game for L.A., knocked a two-run triple to key the third-inning rally that produced three scores.
The Broncos, helped by seven walks in the contest - including three by
Chris Carlson, cut the lead in half with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. The first CPP score came on a
Jordan Whitman RBI single and the second arrived
Trevor Magno grounded out to bring in
Jason Padlo.
The margin didn't draw any closer though as the Golden Eagles put four on the board in the sixth inning as three of those scores came with two outs.
L.A. starter David Armas picked up the win after tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just two earned runs.
Game 2 Box Score | Golden Eagles 3, Broncos 0
Bosson turned in a workmanlike effort in the second game, totaling six innings and allowing just three scores. The Claremont native induced seven groundball outs from the Golden Eagles, who managed to score their first run in the second off a groundball double play.
L.A. would tack on two more scores in the bottom of the fourth, first on a Ryan Cooperstone RBI single and then on a wild pitch that allowed Tyler Christian to race home.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles got a tremendous pitching performance from Brandon Quintero. Despite allowing three hits to
Bo Walter, Quintero gave up just three more hits to the rest of the CPP squad and held the Broncos scoreless through the complete-game seven-inning effort.
