Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - Despite five Broncos scoring in double figures Wednesday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered an 85-69 home loss to Cal State L.A.
The Broncos remain in sixth place in the conference standings with records of 13-12 overall and 11-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP has one regular season game remaining, a 5:30 p.m. home matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Night.
The fifth-place Golden Eagles shot 56.3 percent Wednesday and Richelle Najera led the way, collecting 11 points and 13 rebounds while going 4-for-5 from the field.
The Broncos' bench played well offensively and
Mian Dingle scored a team-high 16 points in reserve duty. Senior
Rachel Hatch added 10 points off the bench.
After a layup from Dingle with 11:41 to play in the second half, CPP cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 53-52. The visiting CSULA squad put together a 9-0 run at that point though - with eight of those points coming on free throws - and that pushed the margin into double digits.
The Broncos showed plenty of resiliency Wednesday as they trailed early in the game, 23-10.
A pair of treys from Hatch helped CPP pull within three points and a Dingle triple tied the score at 31-31 with 2:21 to play in the opening half. The Golden Eagles eventually took a 36-33 edge into the break.
Although L.A. held the lead through the entire second half, the Broncos cut the margin to one point on four different occasions. The aforementioned 9-0 run essentially put the game out of reach around the midway point of the period and CPP couldn't recover.
Freshman
Cydnie Jones put together an all-around stellar performance, collecting 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting with six rebounds and three steals. Fellow starters
Ashley Boggs and
