RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Behind a steady routine of dominant pitching performances, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Cal Baptist Saturday to stay undefeated and improve to 7-0 on the season.
Kevin Bosson and
J.J. Franklin turned in two quality starts to lead the Broncos' pitching staff Saturday.
Bosson threw eight solid innings in game one, scattering three hits and striking out nine CBU batters. Franklin finished with five scoreless innings during the second contest and picked up his first collegiate win of his career.
Senior outfielder
Donald Walter served as the catalyst for the Broncos' offense Saturday in Riverside as he went 5-for-10 at the plate while batting out of the leadoff spot.
Game 1 Box Score | Broncos 5, Lancers 2
CPP fell into a 2-1 deficit during the first game but the visitors' offense came alive in the top of the fifth, scoring four in the decisive rally to help capture a comeback win.
Bosson set the tone in the first, striking out two of the first three batters he faced.
The Broncos' big rally in the fifth started with a leadoff single from senior catcher
Nick O'Loughlin.
Donald Walter provided a bunt single later in the frame before
Joseph Eusebio capped off the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double down the leftfield line.
Freshman right-hander
Cody Ponce picked up his second save of 2013 as he threw a scoreless ninth inning to close out the 5-2 win for CPP.
Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 6, Lancers 2
After posting the comeback win in game one, the Broncos' momentum carried over into the second half of the doubleheader. CPP jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, which started with back-to-back singles from
Donald Walter and
Jordan Whitman with RBI following later off the bat of Eusebio and
Jason Padlo.
In the bottom half of the first, Franklin allowed a leadoff double but settled in nicely to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard. The Broncos' lineup struck for two more scores in the third with a two-out rally. After a Padlo single to the pitcher,
Mike Philp knocked a homerun over the leftfield fence to put CPP up 4-0. It marked the first career homer for Philp, a sophomore from Covina.
After Franklin exited with a stat line of five innings, zero earned runs and four strikeouts, the Broncos' bullpen picked up right where the right-handed starter had left off.
Senior
Erick Ruvalcaba threw the sixth and seventh frames for his first appearance of 2013 and he went perfect, retiring all six batters he faced. CPP took a 6-2 lead into the final inning of play and right-handed reliever
RJ Shanks closed out the contest with a scoreless frame to ensure the four-run result for the visitors.
