Box Score | LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team trailed twice in Friday's game at UC San Diego but found a way to rally on both occasions and topple the nationally-ranked Tritons, 10-8.
The result evens the series at one win apiece and the two squads will travel north to Pomona for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
The Broncos' win raises their marks to 11-6 overall and 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and it drops UCSD to 10-7 overall and 5-5 through league play.
The game featured plenty of key momentum shifts. CPP trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth, when the Broncos put up three runs with
Nick O'Loughlin providing a key two-run single in that rally. CPP added three more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 6-2 advantage.
The Tritons managed to plate five runs in the bottom of the seventh, putting UCSD back in front 7-6. Once again the Broncos responded, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth to steal the lead right back.
Trevor Magno started that eighth-inning rally with a single through the left side of the infield. A few batters later with the bases loaded,
Jordan Whitman knocked a three-run double to the left-center gap to highlight the Broncos' rally. The CPP bullpen worked effectively and held off a late UCSD surge.
RJ Shanks picked up his first career win as a Bronco while
Cody Ponce registered his fourth save of the season.
