Box Score | SAN FRANCISCO - With 14 hits Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised to an 8-1 win over SF State to open a four-game road series against the Gators.
Freshman third baseman
Jason Padlo led the way, capping off a 3-for-5 offensive performance with an inside-the-park homer in the seventh inning. It marked the first homerun for Padlo as a Bronco.
Joseph Eusebio also collected three hits and scored two runs in four at-bats. Four other Broncos -
Trevor Magno,
Bo Walter,
Jordan Whitman and Nicholas Cooksey - posted multi-hit games as well.
Lefthanded starter
Max Bethell got back on the winning track, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run. He picked up three strikeouts while improving to 3-2 in the 2013 season.
The CPP offense didn't waste much time getting going, scoring a two-out run in the first off a groundout by Whitman that allowed
Bo Walter to cross home plate.
The Broncos broke the game wide open in the second inning, scoring five runs in rally that featured a two-run double from Magno that he placed down the leftfield line and a two-run homer from Whitman.
With Bethell's pitch count pushing up to 121, CPP went to the bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Gators had two runners on base with just one out but senior lefthander
Ryan Dunn worked out of the jam, retiring two-straight hitters to avoid any damage.
Dunn finished with 1.2 innings of no-hit and no-walk relief and
J.J. Franklin matched that effort in a one-inning outing to close out the seven-run Broncos' win.
The two squads will resume the series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader in San Francisco.
