Box Score | PHOENIX - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered its first non-conference loss of the 2013 season Monday, dropping a 3-2 result to Grand Canyon on Monday.

The defeat drops the Broncos' overall record to 17-11 as the Lopes improve to 21-5, having won their last 12 games. In the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region poll released Monday, the Broncos were ranked at No. 9 while GCU held the No. 2 spot.

Monday's matchup under the lights at Brazell Stadium featured plenty of stellar pitching performances, including strong starts from CPP senior Kevin Bosson and GCU freshman Kyle Detwiler. After Bosson retired the first four batters he faced, the Lopes put together a rally in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Brendan Smith provided a two-out single to put GCU on the board.

With set pitch counts in the non-conference matchup, Bosson went 2.2 innings while allowing just three hits and inducing six groundball outs. Senior reliever Ryan Dunn contributed a similarly strong performance, going 2.1 innings and giving up one earned run. That score also came with two outs as the Lopes extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Broncos' offense came alive in the top of the sixth with three-straight singles from Bo Walter, Jordan Whitman and Donald Walter. After Donald placed his single into center, Whitman managed to score on a throwing error from the GCU catcher.

The Lopes pushed the advantage back to two runs - 3-1 - with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth but CPP manufactured a score in the top of the seventh to pull within one once again. Joseph Eusebio started the rally with a leadoff single and after Nick O'Loughlin followed with a single, Nicholas Cooksey provided a sacrifice bunt to move his teammates over. Back-to-back walks from Trevor Magno and Bo Walter forced in the Broncos' second run of the game.

The GCU bullpen finished the game strong though as Kevin Behnke and Mark Jarrett combined for 2.2 scoreless innings in the final stages of the contest. The Broncos and Lopes will conclude their two-game series on Tuesday with a 12 p.m. game. CPP returns to conference action later this week as it'll host Sonoma State for a four-game set starting Thursday at 3 p.m.
