Box Score | PHOENIX - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team needed three outs Tuesday to salvage a series split against Grand Canyon but the host Lopes rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to capture a 7-6 win.
Freshman Garrett Jeffries provided the game-winning walk-off hit for GCU as he knocked a two-out double to right-center to score Derek Mendoza and Brandon Smith.
With a 17-12 overall record, the Broncos will return to action Thursday at Scolinos Field in Pomona with a 3 p.m. series opener against Sonoma State. CPP is tied for sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings while the Seawolves, 18-8 overall and 10-6 in league play, hold the No. 3 spot.
In Tuesday's non-conference matchup in Phoenix, the Broncos totaled 12 hits with senior outfielder
Donald Walter leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort.
Jason Padlo contributed a 2-for-2 performance after entering the game as a pinch hitter. As a team though, CPP left 14 runners on base.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the middle innings, the Broncos rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth. CPP took advantage of two errors from the Lopes in the inning and
Donald Walter contributed a two-out double to leftfield.
The Broncos got stellar relief performances through the middle portion of the contest as
J.J. Franklin contributed 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing three hits and collecting a strikeout.
RJ Shanks and
Andy Amaro also delivered scoreless outings with Shanks facing three batters and Amaro opposing seven.
The GCU hitters came through in the clutch though, tallying three runs in the final two innings. Reliever Mark Jarrett picked up the win for the Lopes, improving to 2-0 this season.
