Max Bethell turned in another stellar outing but bullpen and defensive trouble led to a 10-4 loss for the Broncos in Thursday's series opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Broncos and Toros will resume their series on Friday with a 2 p.m. game at Scolinos Field. After Thursday's result, CPP stands at 12-8 overall and 5-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Bethell's outing last 5.2 innings, scattering six hits while giving up three earned runs.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Broncos got a rally going with a leadoff single from
Joseph Eusebio. After advancing to second on a passed ball and moving to third on a fly out, Eusebio then scored on a RBI single by
Trevor Magno.
Bethell ran into trouble in the sixth, giving up back-to-back singles to Kevin Logan and Chris Allen to open the inning. Both Toros ended up scoring to put the visitors ahead 3-2.
Dominguez Hills scored five more runs in the seventh inning, a rally that featured a two-run by Carlos Avila. That inning gave the Toros a commanding 8-2 lead.
