Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The theme of strong defense and a timely goal continued for the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team Tuesday as the Broncos topped Azusa Pacific, 1-0, on a second-half score from
Arika Ontiveros.
CPP now carries a 2-0 overall record into conference play, which will begin on Friday with a 7 p.m. road game at Cal State L.A.
In the Broncos' season-opening win last Thursday over Dominican, freshman
Aleesa Gonzalez netted the game winner. Tonight in matchup between two undefeated teams, it was a veteran's turn to be the hero as Ontiveros capitalized on a pair of slick passes from
Nicole Killigrew and
Monica Quila. Be sure to check out the
video highlights of the match here.
Killigrew initiated the play with a sharp free kick from the left side. Quila deflected the ball into the box, where Ontiveros charged in for a one-on-one with APU goalkeeper Sarah Klinkenberg and placed a low, hard shot into the right side of the net at the 53:25 mark.
Although the match featured plenty of energy from both sides, the two teams combined for 15 shots and neither netminder made a save. Broncos' goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman didn't need to as her backline limited the Cougars to zero shots on goal.
Shots or no shots, it marks the 16th career shutout for Rohman and the second-straight shutout for CPP to start the 2013 campaign.
In the opening half of Tuesday's game, the Broncos' first scoring chance came about midway through the period.
Hailey James sent a cross from the right side to the far post, where
Samantha Stiles narrowly missed getting a shot on frame.
Later in the half,
Nicole Killigrew lined a 30-yard free kick just over the crossbar as APU escaped another CPP opportunity unscathed.
One of the Cougars' best chances came in the 56th minute, when Logan Chan slipped a pass to the right flank for Lindsey Ryals. After a quick dribble toward the edge of the box, Ryals lifted a shot a few feet above the bar.
With another hard-fought 1-0 win to complete the non-conference schedule, the Broncos will now shift their focus to the return of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Friday.
