Box Score | LOS ANGELES – In a matchup between two undefeated teams, Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer secured a hard-fought road win Friday with a 1-0 defeat of Cal State L.A.
The Broncos improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. CPP will return to action Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. match at Cal State Dominguez Hills, a squad that is 1-2 overall after falling to No. 20 UC San Diego on Friday. All three of the Broncos' matches so far in 2013 have ended in 1-0 results.
Broncos' senior forward
Samantha Stiles, an All-Conference performer last year, scored her first goal of 2013 and it proved to be the game-winner Friday under the lights in Los Angeles.
Sophomore
Rachel Killigrew flicked a pass from the right side over to the top of the box for Stiles. The Murrieta native didn't waste another moment, lining a hard shot toward the left side of the net. The ball caromed into the deep part of the box and bounced over the Golden Eagles' diving goalkeeper Amanda Johnson.
Earlier in the first half,
Malia Spencer came close to knocking in her first career goal. On the Broncos' first shot of the match, Spencer lined a hard shot off the left post. Less than two minutes later,
Monica Quila sent a shot just over the crossbar.
Despite facing 10 corner kicks on Friday, the CPP defense held tough. Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman shined, communicating with the team's defenders from start to finish. Sophomore
Hannah Leu also played well, turning away CSULA chances time and time again.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Broncos by a stunning 13-0 margin in the second half but CPP stood its ground. Multiple scoring chances for CSULA ended up with the ball rolling inside the six-yard box but the Broncos managed to clear it out of harm's way just in time. Rohman provided key deflections off some of the set pieces and senior
Kristin Mihara knocked the ball off the goalline a few different times.
Rohman, who is fourth all-time in the Bronco record books for saves, pushed her career total to 220 on Friday with six stops against the Golden Eagles. The victory marked the first CCAA win for Broncos' head coach Mike Dibbini. Coaching for CSULA now is Isabelle Harvey, who spent the last seven years at CPP.
Despite a nervewracking second half in Los Angeles Friday, CPP will now take its 3-0 record into another tough road matchup on Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
