LA JOLLA, Calif. – Despite some tough results in earlier action at the UC San Diego Invitational, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team closed out the competition strong with a thrilling five-set win over Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday night.

Jessica Doerner and Elle Moffatt lifted the CPP offense, combining for 35 of the team's 52 kills. Sophomore setter Nicoletta Stork contributed a career-high 42 assists and she joined Erin Noriega and Tatiana Martinez in adding double-digit dig totals.

After trailing 2-0 in sets, the Broncos rallied for the comeback 3-2 win with narrow 25-23, 25-22 and 17-15 results in the final three frames.

At the conclusion of the action in La Jolla, CPP junior middle blocker Lauren Jones was named to the UCSD Invite All-Tournament Team. Through the four matches, she collected 56 kills and 14 blocks.

The Broncos, having gone 2-6 through non-conference play, will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Thursday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros are 7-1, including a win over nationally-ranked Fresno Pacific.

Cal Baptist 3, Cal Poly Pomona 2 (Box Score)
A back-and-forth match between two familiar opponents went to five sets before the Lancers pulled out the 15-12 win in the final frame to pull out the 3-2 victory.

CPP committed just one service error through the match and as a team, racked up 25 block assists. Jones and Alexa Hasen excelled at the net, collecting six block assists each. Jones also added 18 kills, a team best for the match and a personal season high.

Trailing 2-1 in sets and 19-15 in the fourth frame, Moffatt contributed a kill off a Katie Colin assist to return serve to the Broncos. With Stork serving, CPP got a pair of key blocks from Jones and Christen Williams during a run that put the Broncos in front 20-19.

Although CPP ended up capturing that fourth set, CBU rebounded to win the final frame and the match.

Cal Poly Pomona 3, Point Loma Nazarene 2 (Box Score)
Playing their third five-set match in a span of 48 hours, the Broncos showed plenty of resiliency in the 3-2 victory over Point Loma Nazarene. The win was particularly impressive considering that the Sea Lions of PLNU carried momentum from an upset of No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the day.

CPP couldn't slow down the Point Loma Nazarene attack early on and after falling behind 2-0 in sets, the Broncos actually trailed 22-19 in set No. 3 as well. That's when CPP put together a 6-1 run to win the set and get back into the match. The late run in that frame featured two key kills from Doerner along with a pair of service aces by Zoe Herrera.

The Broncos kept a small lead through most of the fourth set and got the decisive point on a Jones kill. It was anyone's game in the fifth set and the Sea Lions managed to get two match points at 14-13 and 15-14. On both occasions, CPP responded with Moffatt kills off of Stork assists. Once tied at 15-15, Jones and Hasen combined for a block to give the Broncos a match point and Jones then fired in the match-clinching kill.
