Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Putting down a season-high 14 blocks, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-1 Thursday to hand the Toros just their second loss of the season.
It marked the first 2013 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match for both teams and CPP improves to 3-6 overall while Dominguez drops to 7-2. Entering the week's action, the Toros had received votes in the Division II national Top 25 poll.
As the CCAA's top-rated blocker, Broncos' sophomore
Alexa Hasen put that net prowess on display Thursday as she led the team with seven block assists.
Junior
Lauren Jones provided plenty of clutch kills, racking up a team-high total of 14 while committing just three errors.
The Broncos got a balanced defensive effort in the back row as well as
Samantha Cramer,
Tatiana Martinez,
Erin Noriega,
Zoe Herrera and
Nicoletta Stork all collected double-digit dig totals. Stork also added a season-high 43 assists.
That effort contributed to the Toros hitting just .095 on the attack, including a .050 mark in the fourth and final set.
The match actually started out completely in the favor of Dominguez Hills as the visitors ran off a 7-0 rally to open the first set. A kill from
Elle Moffatt stopped that spurt and CPP slowly worked its way back into contention.
With Cramer serving about midway through the set, the Broncos turned an 11-6 deficit into an 11-11 tie. Four of those five points ended in a CPP block. The Broncos closed the frame out on a 3-0 run to take the 25-20 result as
Jessica Doerner and Moffatt contributed kills on the final two points.
The Toros stole back some of the momentum in the second set. Dominguez Hills held a slim 18-17 lead late in the frame but closed out the set strong, getting stellar serving from Alijah Gunsaulus and a few key kills by Tarryn Luafalemana. The Toros took that second set by a margin of 25-22.
In the third set, Dominguez Hills once again reached the 10-point mark before the Broncos for the third time in the match. That didn't stop CPP from rallying though as the blocks continued to pile up. Trailing 20-15 at one point, the Broncos got key kills from Jones and Herrera closed out the 25-21 set win with six-straight serves and an ace to go along with it.
CPP didn't trail at all during the fourth and final set, which went the way of the hosts by a score of 25-21. Redshirt freshman
Hannah Harrer continued to play well and she finished with a season-high 11 kills to join Jones and Doerner in double figures.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a home match against Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles topped Humboldt State Thursday, 3-2, to improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in CCAA action.
