Broncos Dealt First CCAA Loss of 2013 on Saturday

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team couldn't slow down the Cal State L.A. offense Saturday as the Golden Eagles hit at a .370 clip while picking up a 3-0 sweep at Kellogg Gym.

The Broncos fall to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play and CSULA improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in league action.

Iona Lofrano starred for the visitors as she racked up a match-high 18 kills while committing just one error. For CPP, Elle Moffatt put together an efficient performance on the attack. The Broncos' junior ended up with eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

The impressive digs and blocks from CPP on Thursday against Cal State Dominguez Hills didn't carry over to Saturday as the Broncos were outmatched in the dig category 47-34 and picked up just four team blocks.

The first game featured plenty of back-and-forth lead changes between the two teams and several early kills from Jessica Doerner forced CSULA to call a timeout. Later in the set, a solo block by Alexa Hasen brought the Golden Eagles' lead to 21-20 but the visitors closed out strong to take the frame 25-20.

The second set ended in a similar fashion as Hasen and Doerner combined on a block to pull the Broncos to within 20-19. L.A. put together a 5-0 run to finish the game though and four of those points came off of April Reyes serves.

The Golden Eagles carried plenty of momentum in the third game, which L.A. took control of with a 10-1 start. Doerner and Megan Byrne added a few kills to get CPP on the board more frequently but the Golden Eagles closed out the match with a 25-14 margin in the final set. Doerner finished with 10 kills and in the setting aspect, Nicoletta Stork contributed 25 assists.

The Broncos will return to action next weekend with road matches at Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
