Broncos Fall to Chico State Sunday in Overtime, 1-0

9/22/2013 3:59:00 PM

Box Score | CHICO, Calif. – In a tightly-contested match Sunday at Chico State, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team pushed the contest into overtime but the Wildcats captured a 1-0 win with a goal in the 93rd minute.

On that final play, J.P. Medina lifted a pass over the Broncos' defense and Matt Hurlow raced in to line a shot inside the near post from about 15 yards out.

CPP's records settle at 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). At 3-1 in league play, Chico State jumps into first place in the South Division standings after entering the week with a No. 14 national ranking.

The Broncos got the first few scoring chances Sunday. Brandon Cortez took a pair of corner kicks in the ninth minute and off the second try, Daniel Garcia Jr. attempted the first shot of the match.

Shots were a bit rare Sunday though with CPP ending up with a slight 7-6 advantage in what turned out to be very tactical sort of match. Both of the Broncos' two shots on goal were taken by freshman Luis Najera Jr.

For the second time this season though, CPP couldn't find the back of the net. Sunday's match completes a stretch of six-straight road games to start the 2013 campaign. The Broncos will return to Kellogg Field for the home opener Friday with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff against Sonoma State.

The Seawolves captured an overtime win Sunday to remain in first place of the North Division at 3-1 in CCAA play.
