SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team bounced back from a tough 3-1 loss early Saturday to capture a 3-1 win over Fort Lewis to end tournament play at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino.
Sophomore middle blocker
Alexa Hasen, who leads the team in attack percentage through the first four matches, connected for a career-high 16 kills during CPP's victory against Fort Lewis.
The Broncos, now 1-3 overall on the season, will return to action next weekend at the UC San Diego Invitational in La Jolla. CPP's play at that tournament starts Friday with a 12 p.m. match against Alaska Anchorage (4-3).
Central Washington 3, Cal Poly Pomona 1 (Box Score)The Wildcats of CWU staked a lead early in the opening set and the Broncos couldn't close the gap in time for that frame, which ended at 25-22. The second set proved to be epic and behind three-straight kills from
Brianna Thierjung, CPP rallied to take a 24-23 lead. The Wildcats ended up closing out a 27-25 victory in that game with Catie Fry finishing it out with a service ace.
The Broncos put together a great set in the third as they pushed the score from 17-16 to 22-16 with a run that featured Hasen prominently and ended with a
Tatiana Martinez ace. CPP took that frame by a result of 25-20 to force a fourth.
Despite ending up with three players in double-digit kill totals, the Broncos couldn't hold off a strong CWU attack in the 3-1 loss.
Jessica Doerner finished with a team-high 16 kills while
Christen Williams put together a breakout performance, collecting a career-high 15 kills. Her previous best was three.
Roxanne Cardona made a stellar debut for CPP with 17 digs.
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Fort Lewis 1 (Box Score)Helped by multiple Fort Lewis attack errors in the opening set, the Broncos cruised to a 25-13 win in that first frame. To close out that set, Thierjung registered four of the team's final five kills to fuel the CPP offense.
Fort Lewis bounced back to secure a 25-19 victory in the second set thanks in part to strong play from Ashley Wells, who finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs. The FLC momentum wouldn't last long though as the Broncos opened the third set with a 3-0 run that featured two kills from Hasen.
The two teams traded leads for a bit but CPP reeled off an 8-0 run in the heart of the set with senior
Erin Noriega serving during that key stretch. She recorded three service aces in that run and freshman teammate
Megan Byrne actually added three service aces of her own in the match.
After taking the third set, 25-21, the Broncos put up another great battle in the fourth that ended up going in their favor 27-25. CPP actually trailed 25-24 but came up with key plays down the stretch.
First it was a
Katie Colin assist to a
Nicoletta Stork kill that tied the game at 25-25. That was followed by a Byrne kill coupled with a Stork assist to give the Broncos a one-point lead. With Martinez service, Hasen and Stork combined for the match-clinching block.
