Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Four Broncos scored in double figures Saturday as the 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rolled to an 87-53 defeat of Sonoma State at Kellogg Gym.
It marked the largest margin of victory so far this season for CPP, a team that now stands alone in first place for the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos, now 10-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play, started the night tied with Cal State East Bay but the Pioneers (6-2 CCAA) suffered a road loss to Cal State San Bernardino.
CPP put together another strong performance from beyond the arc Saturday, going 8-for-14 at that range. The Broncos have knocked down 46 percent of their three-point attempts in the last three games.
Also on Saturday, CPP finished with a wide rebounding margin of 45-29 as
Ashley Lovett and
Cydnie Jones grabbed nine boards apiece. Junior center
Jada Blackwell led the scoring with 17 points while
Ariel Marsh (15), Jones (14) and
J.J. Judge (12) joined her in double figures.
Great passing from the Broncos got everyone involved in the offense.
Tyler Woods and Blackwell set season highs in assists with totals of five and four respectively. CPP also stayed aggressive on the offensive glass, tallying 18 boards at that end with six coming from Jones.
The Broncos and Seawolves remained tied at 21-21 midway through the opening half but CPP stepped up the pressure from that point forward. The host squad closed out the first half on a 24-6 run.
The Broncos got a defensive stop on the opening possession of the second half and then Blackwell dropped in a layup on the opposite end of the floor to keep up the CPP momentum.
Plenty of the Broncos' offense Saturday came from high-percentage looks from Blackwell and stellar three-point shooting by Judge, Marsh and
Jordan Henry. Henry finished with eight points and four rebounds, both representing season bests.
Despite the Seawolves facing a large deficit through most of Saturday's contest, SSU guard Tanner Adams turned in a strong performance with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
Now on a three-game winning streak while holding a 7-1 record at Kellogg Gym, the Broncos will face a tough road test Friday against third-place Cal State L.A. The L.A. squad is 5-2 so far this year at the Eagles' Nest.
