Box Score | CARSON, Calif. – CARSON, Calif. - The No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured its fifth-straight win Saturday as the Broncos topped Cal State Dominguez Hills, 64-53, to hand the Toros their first home loss of the 2013-14 season.
CPP knocked down six of its eight three-point attempts in the first half to take a 33-26 edge into the break. The Toros managed to cut the margin down to five points late in the game but the Broncos held on for the road victory.
With a 12-2 overall record and a 9-1 mark in conference play, CPP continues to hold first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Dominguez Hills entered Saturday's contest with a 4-0 record at the Torodome. The Broncos' first-place lead is now at two wins with second-place Cal State East Bay falling to Cal State Stanislaus.
The Broncos' Saturday performance represented another impressive team effort as four CPP players finished in double figures for the third-consecutive game.
Junior guard
Ariel Marsh continued her strong shooting Saturday, collecting a team-high 20 points to lead the Broncos' offense. She's gone 12-for-22 from three-point range through the last four games.
Fellow third-year
Jada Blackwell also starred once again with another great effort offensively and on the boards. She finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. Blackwell has posted double-double performances in four of the last five contests.
Junior forward
Ashley Lovett tallied her first double-double effort as a Bronco Saturday, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding a season-high four assists.
CPP got off to a quick start Saturday with
J.J. Judge knocking down a three for the game's first points and
Tyler Woods dropping in a layup on the next possession. The Broncos' lead widened to double digits after Marsh registered five-straight points around the midway point of the half.
The Toros got a triple from Taylor Champion late in the half and the score settled at 33-26 in favor of CPP going into the intermission.
Dominguez Hills stayed within striking distance and cut the difference to 45-40 with nine minutes to play in the contest. After that 6-0 run for the Toros was capped off with a Monay Lee jumper, the Broncos bounced back and got the lead back to double digits when Lovett knocked down a shot at the five-minute mark.
Five points was as close as the Toros could get to CPP during the second half as the Broncos wrapped up their fifth-straight win. The Broncos will look to extend the streak on Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. home game against Chico State as part of "Pack the Stands" at Kellogg Gym.
