Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – With a well-rounded attack of physical play and three-point efficiency, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 73-60 home win over San Francisco State Thursday.
The victory pushes the Broncos to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as CPP now stands alone in first place for the conference with an extra game played. The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Sonoma State.
CPP knocked down 10 three-pointers as a team Thursday for the first time this season. Senior guard
J.J. Judge sank five of those treys, raising her career total to 115.
The Broncos outrebounded the Gators by a wide 54-38 margin with
Jada Blackwell and
Ashley Lovett grabbing 13 boards apiece. Blackwell and Judge finished with double-double performances while
Ariel Marsh added 18 points and four assists.
At the center of SFSU's game Thursday was Katie Batlin, who finished with 11 rebounds, 10 points, six assists and three steals. The rebounding deficit proved to be too much to overcome though for the Gators and CPP limited SFSU to a 33.8-percent shooting effort.
The first half played out very evenly and a 6-1 run for the Broncos to close out the period helped the host squad take a 35-30 edge into the break. Lovett provided the final four points of that spurt to end the opening half.
Judge knocked down one of her five threes on the first possession of the second half but the Broncos' momentum couldn't be sustained through the early portion of the period as the margin bounced in single digits.
SFSU trimmed the difference to just one - 56-55 - off a Lauren Varney fastbreak layup with 8:37 to play. The host CPP squad stepped up its level of play down the stretch though, including a 12-0 run that featured 10-straight points from Blackwell.
As it turned out, the Varney layup at the 8:37 mark was the last successful field goal for the Gators' squad Thursday.
The Broncos also helped themselves by shooting well at the free throw line, going 13-for-15 as a team while Marsh knocked down four of her five attempts. CPP grabbed 20 offensive rebounds for the first time in two months as Lovett led the way with five of her own.
