Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Another Victory! CPP Win Streak Now at 10

POMONA, Calif. - A game after taking sole possession of first place, the 10th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team defeated Cal State Stanislaus 2-1 on Sunday to remain at the helm of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

With each victory, the Broncos increase their record of games without a loss. CPP's current overall tally is 11-0-1, including a 6-0 record in the CCAA.

The Warriors' loss registers them with a 4-5-3 count on the year thus far, and an even 2-2-2 in conference.

"We feel like today was another great day in our special journey," said head coach Yossi Raz. "The leadership of this team continues to amaze me. Having so many players who step up and make big plays when we need them most is a testament to just how talented this team is."

Reminiscent of Friday's game against Cal State East Bay, the Broncos came out of the gate strong and the first half was certainly no exception. In the first half, the Broncos outshot the Warriors 11-2.

In the 35th minute, Armando Ochoa, who scored his first and second goal as a Bronco on Friday, found the back of the net again. He was aided by two of CPP's squad, Daniel Asor and Jesus Tamayo.

Just three minutes later, the Broncos did it again. On a corner kick, Ochoa found an open Eshel Chardon, who crossed the ball to CPP's assist leader Daniel Garcia Jr. The senior midfielder from Lakewood sent a long pass to Leonel Espinoza, who provided a beauty of a header to give the Broncos the 2-0 lead. The goal was Espinoza's first as a member of the Broncos. Garcia's 10 assists on the year not only leads CPP, but all of NCAA Division II.

"Garcia had another assist," said Raz. "Ochoa put another point on the board and the back line played so well throughout the entire match that it was beautiful to watch."

At half the Broncos led the Warriors 2-0. In the second half, CSUS found a small spark as its defense only allowed the Broncos to shoot six times. Throughout the entire game, the defense of CPP allowed only eight shots - two in the first and six in the second.

With just under 12 minutes on the game clock, the Warriors found their first goal as a rebound opportunity proved fruitful. A member of the Stanislaus squad took a shot that was blocked by the Bronco defense and found Jose Ramirez of the Warriors. Ramirez took a shot and it deflected off a Bronco player to give the visitors their only point of the day.

CPP got a welcome visit from University President Dr. J. Michael Ortiz, who addressed the team after the match. Coach Raz said: "I want to thank Dr. Ortiz for visiting the team afterwards and for his kind words as we continue to do our best to represent Cal Poly Pomona. It is a wonderful university that we are very proud to be a part of."

The Broncos will return to Kellogg Field on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to play a non-conference match against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds hold an overall record of 8-2 and command a 6-1 mark in the PacWest. The only other time the Broncos and Sunbirds have met was in 1986, when FPU defeated the Broncos 2-1.
